Summer Perennial Profiles



Its high summer here again in southern Maine and our perennial field is abound with blooms. It's the season we cherish, love and have been waiting for all year. We have a huge collection of outstanding perennials suited to our zone and habitat and bloom when they are supposed to here on the farm; plant material here is never forced and all grown right here at SHF.
So we are taking you on a little tour of what is standing out now in our short growing season this summer as far as flowering perennials goes. Above to start is a large flowering Catmint or Nepeta and following some selected beauties out of the many we have to offer.

Nepeta subsessilis 'Sweet Dreams'
Large, soft two-tone pink flowers on upright clumping plants.
Full to part sun in well drained soil.
12-24" tall

Coreopsis 'Sienna Sunset'
Burnt sienna flowers lighten to orange. Finely textured foliage and if deadheaded can repeat its summer bloom.
Full sun to part shade in moderate dry soil.

Penstemon 'Delfts Blue Ridding Hood'
Clump forming upright perennial with tubular delphinium blue summer blooms.
Full sun with well drained soil.

Astilbe 'Peach Blossom'
Stout compact peach-pink florets with glossy green foliage blooming early summer. Seed heads make great architectural interest in the garden.
Shade to part shade planted in rich moist soil.

Astrantia 'Vanilla Gorilla'
A new variegated variety with pale lilac-rose flowers carried high above the foliage. A perfect part-shade garden candidate.

Achillea noblessa
An exciting yarrow variety. This rambling meadow plant produces double white flowers.

Veronica longifolia 'Eveline'
A new Veronica that features red-violet spikes that bloom from June to August.  It sports long, pointed, dark green leaves.
